The so called “Iron Curtain” divided Europe for almost four decades into two political blocks. The EuroVelo 13 - Iron Curtain trail crosses Europe on 10.400 km from the Barents Sea at the Norwegian-Russian border to Black Sea. The route enters Czechia near Aš and continues historic town of Cheb (ICT monument at Kříže), other monuments expect you near Rozvadov at Nové Domky (monument dedicated to barbed wire cutting and Museum of Iron Curtain at border crossing Rozvadov/Waidhaus). The route follows former military road in Upper Palatine Forest and later on enters Bohemian and Bavarian Forest with amazing nature and some remnants of the Iron Curtain or divided train station Železná Ruda/Bayr. Unique experience offers cycling along the Scharzenberg water and logging canal and near Lipno Lake to Vyšší Brod. Next mountain range is Nové Hrady Mountains with open air museum of the Iron Curtain. After passing Bohemian Canada you will reach the renaissance town Slavonice with a nearby fortification with bunkers built before the World War II. Cycling through South Moravia is much easier compared to previous hilly regions. After entering the National park Podyjí/Thayatal you can visit the visitors center and 350 m long remnant of the intact iron Curtain in Čížov). From Podyjí you arrive to the historic town and wine center of Znojmo. The Palava hills are crowned with mediaeval town Mikulov with a Freedom trail and monument to the victims of the Iron curtain, known as Gate to Freedom. Past Mikulov you enter the UNESCO Lednice–Valtice Cultural Landscape, which is a large landscape park with monuments and nature. History of the Iron Curtain is documented also in a museum at the Czech-Austrian border near Valtice right at the trail. The route reenters Austria near confluence of Morava and Dyje rivers near Břeclav. The route is entirely signposted with the international EuroVelo 13 logo. The route stretches for almost 900 km and we recommend to reserve 20 days (divided in 10 day trips) while using the cycle friendly establishments „Cyclists welcome“.
